Roman Polanski wrote in his autobiography: "Although se never mentioned marriage, and despite her liberated California life-style, I knew that her Catholic upbringing made marriage important to her.  I proposed off the cuff, over dinner in a restaurant. The date we settled on – January 20, 1968 – fell a few days before her twenty-fifth birthday. We decide to get married in London; that was my real home and the place where most of our friends lived."

"Sharon wore a cream-colored taffeta minidress, and I sported an olive green Edwardian jacket - a tribute to some hard selling by Jack Vernon, a Hollywood boutique owner. We were a grotesque sight. Looking at our wedding pictures now, I’m struck by the oddness of everyone’s clothes at this, the zenith of the ‘rich hippie’ era. "

"The wedding ceremony at the Chelsea Registry Office in the King’s Road turned into a media event, with photographers outnumbering the guests."

"Gene Gutowski (behind Roman) was my best man and Barbara Parkins (on his left) the bridesmaid.

The Party

"There were several parties afterward. The biggest of them, at the Playboy club, was attended by what seemed like the whole of London and half of Hollywood. Candice Bergen, Joan Collins, Leslie Caron, John Mills, Laurence Harvey, Anthony Newley, Warren Beatty, James Fox, and Mike Sarne also showed up later at a shinding given for us by Tony Greenburgh."

"Halfway through the festivities Sharon and I bowed out. We couldn’t take any more parties or champagne, so we headed for West Eaton Place Mews and holed up in our house, which was littered with gifts, flowers, and congratulatory telegrams.”

Note from the webmaster: It seems that Jacquelinne Susann also attended one of the parties, according to the postcard she sent to a friend in New York City.

It was the “turned on wedding of the year” when Polish born film director Roman Polanski and American actress (“Valley of the Dolls”) Sharon Tate were married yesterday at the King’s Road, Chelsea, Register Office. The reception was held at the Playboy Club, Park Lane, complete with stars like Warren Beatty, James Fox, Laurence Harvey and Leslie Caron. Polanski spoke of his early days with Sharon. “Yeah, it’s true I photographed her in the nude. Yeah, the pictures appeared in ‘Playboy’ but that’s all over now...No, that doesn’t mean she stops working. I want a hippy not a housewife.”

He wore an all-green Regency double-breasted suit; she, a cream satin minigown and flowers in her hair. For their star-spangled nuptial reception, acress Sharon Tate and film director Roman Polanski chose the Plaboy Club of London. Also on hand for the celebrated occasion were such acting luminaries as Anthony Newley, Laurence Harvey, Barbara Parkins, Michael Caine, Leslie Caron, Warren Beatty, Candice Bergen and a coterie of other showbiz prominents. When it came time for the cake-cutting ceremony, the bride and bridegroom were faced with a funny mix-up. Due to an innocent goof, the inscription on the frosting read, HAPPY RETIREMENT, HILDA. “ We don’t mind if Hilda doesn’t,” said the smiling, photogenic Sharon.
